Facial Recognition

Please read the applicable Terms of Use.

Description

Facial recognition is the automatic identification of an individual based on a picture (or video) of their face, usually using machine learning techniques.

There are several ways to design and implement facial recognition, in visible or infrared (or even thermal) light, and with different machine learning techniques (explicit extraction of features, use of entire image, measure of 3D points, analysis of skin texture, etc.).

This method of identification is non invasive and discreet, which allows for smoother controls (e.g. border control) and even mass surveillance (in airports or even cities). However, concerns about ethics and reliability can be raised in some situations.

Use in the airline industry

Facial recognition can be used in several ways in airports. As other biometrics (e.g. iris scan, fingerprints), it can help speed up identity control. It can also be used to track individuals in order to detect early security threats. It could even be a tool to enhance the passenger experience through emotion recognition. However, its use may be subject to controversy.
